If requested, we will also consult with our students’ schools and teachers.
Illuminated Learning's initial evaluation helps identify academic strengths and weaknesses and helps us understand why someone is struggling with the learning process.
After explaining the results of our assessment, we provide recommendations on how to best light a student’s spark.
Each Illuminated Learning program is 3 hours per day, 5 days a week, for approximately 8 weeks. Please understand that this is just an approximate estimate, and that some individuals may need more intensive time, white others may not need as much.
All programs offered at Kennedy Illuminated Learning are a process. As a result, we want to keep you up to date regarding your child’s progress throughout their time at Kennedy Illuminated Learning. We offer in person progress meetings every 15-30 hours, depending on a student’s schedule.
After completion of a program at Illuminated Learning, we can provide follow-up support as students adapt and apply their new skills to school-based learning.
Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light. —Vera Nazarian
All programs offered at Illuminated Learning require a commitment to a consistent schedule of intensive remediation. The effects of this learning endeavour are life changing, and consistent attendance is key to seeing these results.
Research has repeatedly shown that in order for treatment to be effective, it must be:
We hear you. This person is bright, has lost confidence, is working hard without results, maybe there’s school stress, learning differences, reading frustration.
The Illuminated Learning approach is different:
Not homework help. Not one-size-fits-all tutoring. Research-based, individualized, emotionally supportive, strategy-focused.
I have been working on a testimonial for years in my head for you and your school and the many times I have started the draft, or tried to edit it, I end up in tears and so full of emotion I simply couldn’t finish writing it or sending it. I really need you to understand how grateful we are and how much we appreciate your efforts and your dedication to his learning journey.
When Niko began his journey with Illuminated Learning he was getting pushed along through the public school system. As much as his teachers could do with him in the time allotted, he was hitting very few millstones, leaving him further and further behind his peers, and our family more and more frustrated with the system. Illuminated Learning was just starting, and the coincidence of this opportunity that fell in our lap was just too perfect to even dream up. We thought he might gain a few more skills and be able to communicate with his peers and family a little easier. What we could have never imagined was how profoundly this school would change his life and ours.
As parents we wanted to give Niko the skills to be understood, feel included, and have the ability to express what was in his head and heart. Niko was diagnosed with severe failure to thrive. Walking, motor skills and communication did not come easy, as has was born with a whole array of problems. There were times when we wondered how much he would be able to achieve. We tried to remain hopeful, but also understood that his journey through life would be different.
What makes Lib and Ali so remarkable is the process behind everything they do. They began by meeting Niko exactly where he specifically needed to start; with basic fundamental academic skills. They had a structured approach and were consistent and repetitive; and it was personally tailored all for him. They took the time to learn what motivates him and understand how he learns. As his foundational skills became stronger, they gradually expanded his learning, continually reinforcing what he had learned before introducing the next step. They helped him turn all the small specific skills into meaningful reading, understanding and comprehension. The progress Niko has made in reading and comprehension of the world around him has grown in ways we never expected. He is better able to follow conversations, understand social situations and express himself. The reading level for the books and engaging stories were all carefully chosen to help him understand and relate to the world around him and became a bridge for him to explore, learn life lessons and connect it back to his own life.
Things that may seem small or ordinary to others are monumental to a family that has a kid with special needs. Watching your child accomplish something you feared might always be beyond their reach is almost impossible to put into words. It is pride, gratitude, and joy all at once. His journey has not been easy, but
because the teachers set expectations and he was pushed to work so hard he has come so much further than we ever dared imagine. They really helped him discover what he was capable of.
I often tell people that, “Illuminated Learning has not only educated Niko but they have completely changed his life”. They have given him reading and comprehension skills that will remain with him forever, more importantly they have helped him understand the world around him, and that has in turn created a meaningful place for him within it. There is no better single decision or choice that we could have made for Niko than sending him to Illuminated Learning. They gave him the ability to read, understand, and communicate. He can express himself more clearly, connect with others more confidently and participate in his community around him with greater independence. Illuminated Learning has given all these things to Niko, and our family will be forever grateful.
